Biography

Jan Willem de Vriend is Principal Conductor of the Wiener KammerOrchester, Principal Guest Conductor of the City of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, and artistic partner of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. He makes regular guest appearances with such ensembles as the Belgian National Orchestra, HR-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Melbourne Symphony, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Yomiuri Nippon Symphony.
In the 2025/26 season Jan Willem de Vriend returns to the Musikkollegium Winterthur, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Stavanger Symphony, Stuttgart Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Trondheim Symphony and Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich. He will also appear in a semi-staged opera productionof Lo Speziale (Director: Eva Buchmann) at the Ludwigsburger Schloßfestspiele.

Furthermore three new recordings were recently released: Mozart Piano Concertos Nos 20 & 12 (Dejan Lazić/ Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra – Challenge Records), Schumann Symphonies Nos 3 & 4 (Stavanger Symphony Orchestra – Challenge Records) and Emilie Mayer Symphonies Nos 4 & 6 (NDR Radiophilharmonie – CPO).

Jan Willem de Vriend was Principal Conductor of the Residentie Orkest Den Haag and Chief Conductor of Phion, Orkest van Gelderland & Overijssel. He was also Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre National de Lille, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, South Netherlands Philharmonic and the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra.

De Vriend and the Netherland Symphony Orchestra went on to record a substantial Beethoven catalogue for Challenge Classics, embracing the complete symphonies and concertos (with Hannes Minnaar and Liza Ferschtman among the soloists). Classic FM praised the interpretation of Symphony No 7 for “a bounding flair that does real justice to the composer’s capacity for joy”. Further landmarks in the Challenge Classics catalogue are the complete Mendelssohn
symphonies, again with the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, and the complete symphonies of Schubert, recorded with the Residentie Orkest, also de Vriend’s orchestra for a Decca recording of Mendelssohn’s complete works for piano and orchestra.

De Vriend first established an international reputation as Artistic Director of the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, which he established in 1982 and led from the violin until 2015. Specialising in music of the 17th and 18th century, and applying historically informed practice on modern instruments, the consort gave new life to many rarely heard works and Gramophone magazine praised its players as “with technical finesse and a lively feeling for characterisation”. Its collaborative spirit lives on in de Vriend’s approach as he explores and energises the symphonic repertoire, in particular the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms and Johann Strauss.

In the field of opera, in both Europe and the USA, de Vriend and Combattimento Consort Amsterdam gave performances of works by Monteverdi, Haydn, Handel, Telemann, and J.S. Bach (the Hunting and Coffee cantatas at the Leipzig Bach Festival), all in stagings by the director Eva Buchmann. Operas by such composers as Mozart, Verdi and Cherubini featured in his seasons with the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, which included a visit to Switzerland with productions of Don Giovanni and Rossini’s La Gazzetta, again directed by Eva Buchmann. De Vriend has also conducted operas in Amsterdam (Nederlandse Reisopera), Barcelona, Strasbourg, Luzern, Schwetzingen and Bergen.

In the Netherlands he has presented several television series and is well known for his appearances on a variety of other programmes about music. In 2012 he received a prize from the national station NPO Radio 4 for his creative contribution to classical music.

Biography

“Daniel Raiskin is clearly a musician of sensibility, well versed in his craft; a further example perhaps
of one last great gift of the old Soviet Union, the rigour and distinction of its conducting schools”
(by David Gutman, Gramophone).

With his unmistakable artistic signature, Daniel Raiskin has become one of the most recognized conductors of his generation and had developed a broad repertoire beyond the mainstream in his strikingly conceived programmes. A son of a prominent musicologist, Daniel Raiskin grew up in St. Petersburg. He attended the celebrated conservatory in his native city and continued his studies in Amsterdam and Freiburg. First focusing on viola, he was inspired to take up the baton as a result of an encounter with the distinguished teacher Lev Savich. In addition, he also took classes with Maestri such as Mariss Jansons, Neeme Järvi, Milan Horvat, Woldemar Nelson und Jorma Panula.

Daniel Raiskin is the Designated Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra in Ostrava, Principal Conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in Bratislava, Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra.

In the 2025/26 season tours will take him with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra to Spain and Japan and with the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra to the UK, Amsterdam and Salzburg. His regular guest appearances include the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony, Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra Taiwan, Orchestre National de Belgique, Orchestre National de Lyon, Residentie Orkest, Sinfonia Varsovia, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony and Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Raiskin was Chief Conductor of the Artur Rubinstein Philharmonic Orchestra in Lódz, Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie in Koblenz and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in Bratislava, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife.

His appearances in opera productions include Carmen, Shostakovich’s The Nose and Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Festival appearances include Music in the Mountains in Colorado in 2025 and performances with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra at the InClassica Dubai International Music Festival in 2021 and 2022. Furthermore, he conducted the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra on a tour in Japan and South Korea in 2023.

Daniel Raiskin is also relentlessly committed to sharing his knowledge and passion with young musicians around the world. He devotes his time regularly to working with youth orchestras in a.o. Canada, Estonia, Germany, Iceland, Netherlands and South Africa.

Among the major soloists with whom he has appeared are Emanuel Ax, Rudolf Buchbinder, Cameron Crozman, Xavier de Maistre, Renée Fleming, Nelson Freire, Martin Fröst, Alban Gerhardt, Vadim Gluzman, Natalia Gutman, Daniel Hope, Kari Kriikku, Simone Lamsma, Lang Lang, Dejan Lazić, Francois Leleux, Jan Lisiecki, Alexei Lubimov, Tatjana Masurenko, Albrecht Mayer, Daniel Müller-Schott, Olli Mustonen, Julian Rachlin, Benjamin Schmid, Julian Steckel, Anna Vinnitskaya, Lukáš Vondráček and Alexei Volodin.

His extensive discography includes recordings of Mahler Symphony No. 3 and Shostakovich Symphony No. 4 (AVI), both to great critical acclaim, a Louis Glass Symphony cycle and a concerto cycle with the entire concertos and rhapsodies by Aram Khachaturian (CPO), Lutosławski’s vocal-instrumental works (Dux) and a recording of Alexander Tansman’s Isaie le Prophète and Psaumes (World Premiere Recordings). His recording with cello concertos by Korngold, Bloch and Goldschmidt with Julian Steckel (AVI) label received an Echo Klassik Award in 2012.

Biography

As a music director and guest conductor committed to collaboration, innovation and education,
Sarah Ioannides creates vibrant programming that inspires her audience. She was praised by the New York Times for her “undisputed strength and authority.” She is music director of Washington State’s Symphony Tacoma and resident conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. While centred on the USA, her career as a conductor has taken her to six continents. Sarah Ioannides was the first woman to hold a full-time position as a conductor with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Australia of Cypriot and Scottish descent, Sarah Ioannides trained in the UK (Oxford University, Guildhall School) and USA (Juilliard School and Curtis Institute). Before assuming her role at Symphony Tacoma in 2014, she established a reputation as the dynamic music director of both the El Paso Symphony Orchestra in Texas and the Spartanburg Philharmonic in South Carolina.

Her extensive repertoire, which spans four centuries, has been enriched through her work with living composers, not least as the conductor of over 60 world, North American and European premieres. She has collaborated with such figures as Steve Reich, Aaron J Kernis, Zosha Di Castri, Patrice Rushen and in the earlier years of her career was mentored by Tan Dun, notably taking charge of the Australian and Greek premieres of his Water Passion after St. Matthew and acting as his assistant conductor with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra.  One of her earliest operatic projects was the European premiere of Stephen Paulus’s The Woodlanders.

In addition to her Symphony Tacoma season, her North American appearances include orchestras such as Buffalo Philharmonic, Calgary Philharmonic, the Florida Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, Hawai’I Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, Rochester Philharmonic, Sarasota Orchestra, Seattle Symphony and the Lake Chelan Bach Fest. The programming ranges wide – from Mozart to re-emerging composers like Louise Farrenc, Florence Price, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Joseph Boulogne, and contemporary works by Aaron J Kernis, Valerie Coleman, Bernard Roumain, Nick DiBerardino and Jesse Montgomery.

Beyond North America, Sarah Ioannides’ past and current engagements include the Bilbao Symphony, Brussels Philharmonic, Daejeon Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony, Konzerthaus-orchester Berlin, Malmö Symphony, Nordic Chamber Orchestra, Tonkünstler-Orchester, Orchestre National de Lyon, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Simón Bolívar Symphony.

Making creative use of technology to expand musical horizons, she has led numerous multimedia projects in both the concert hall and the digital environment. These include videos to illustrate Holst’s Planets, Steve Reich’s Desert Music and Milhaud’s Création du Monde and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Symphony Tacoma’s Encore Series and the ‘digital collage’ Eternal Light: inspired by Mozart’s Requiem, it comprises clips of music, dance, poetry and visual art created by students in the Pacific Northwest.

One of Sarah Ioannides’ significant achievements in the field of education is Cascade Conducting & Composing; she is Founding Artistic Director of this annual Tacoma-based programme, established in 2017, which offers scholarships to diverse musicians from the US and the rest of the world. Furthermore she is the newly appointed Director of Orchestral Activities at Boston University beginning in August 2024. In 2025 she will conduct the Massachusetts All-State Festival Orchestra and in 2023 she was the Resident Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra – USA. Among the conservatory orchestras she conducts are those of Yale University, Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music and Bloomington’s Jacobs School of Music. A sought-after guest speaker, Sarah Ioannides sits on numerous advisory boards and has served as both panelist of the NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) for the US Government and delegate at the World Culture Summit in Abu-Dhabi. In 2022 she spoke at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Women in Classical Music Symposium and conference. In June 2023 she was a panelist at ‘Bridges to the Future’, and at the conference of the League of American Orchestras.

Biography

“Lazić plays with palpable heart, with genuine spirit that derives entirely from the music itself, with dexterity, subtlety and insight that make this recital thoroughly compelling.”  (The Telegraph)

Dejan Lazić’s fresh interpretations of the piano repertoire have established him as one of the most unique and unusual soloists of his generation. The Spiegel magazine noted of his Liszt recording for Onyx Classics: “Grandiose technique, dedicated and witty, whilst full-bodied and thoughtful: this longitudinal section through Liszt’s oeuvre is a gift, both for beginners and connoisseurs.”

Lazić appears with orchestras such as Atlanta Symphony, Bergen Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Danish National Symphony, Helsinki Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Indianapolis Symphony, London Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie, Netherlands Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, Seoul Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, Tokyo Symphony, Yomiuri Nippon, and the Australian Chamber and Basel Chamber orchestras. He has a significant following in the Far East touring China with Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer, in addition to appearances with orchestras in Hong Kong, Seoul, and Tokyo. Dejan Lazić has built close collaborations with conductors including Marc Albrecht, Giovanni Antonini, Jan Willem de Vriend, Iván Fischer, Michael Francis, Hartmut Haenchen, Tianyi Lu, Jun Märkl, Andris Nelsons, Markus Poschner, Daniel Rasikin, Thomas Søndergård, Robert Spano, John Storgårds, Krzysztof Urbański, Kazuki Yamada and Simone Young.

Chamber concerts and recitals take him to venues such as Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires), Lincoln Center (New York), Melbourne Recital Centre, Forbidden City Recital Hall (Peking) and to festivals such as the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg and the Gstaad Menuhin Festival with chamber music partners such as Joshua Bell, Sol Gabetta, Andreas Ottensamer and Benjamin Schmid. He is the designated Artistic Director of the Toujours Mozart Festival in Munich.

Dejan Lazić is also active as a composer and has been under contract with Sikorski Music Publishers since 2015. His compositions receive increased recognition, most recently “Piano Concerto in Istrian Style”, Op. 18 and “Alterations on the Istrian Folk Anthem”, Op. 29 recorded 2023 with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester under Ivan Repušić for the BR Klassik label under the title “Istrian Rhapsody” which was on the Opus Klassik 2024 Shortlist in two categories: Composer of the Year and Concert Recording of the Year.

Other recent works include two new compositions for violin: “Chinese Fantasy” for violin and orchestra Op. 22 and Variations on a Kanding Love Song for violin solo. His “S.C.H.E.rzo” for Orchestra, Op. 25, commissioned by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra was premiered with Krzysztof Urbański in 2020. Lazić’s Mozart adaptation, “Rondo Concertante” for piano and orchestra (after the 3rd movement from Mozart’s Piano Sonata in B-flat major, K. 333) was premiered in 2018 at the “Mainly Mozart” Festival in San Diego, USA. His first major orchestral work, a tone poem entitled “Mozart and Salieri” (after Alexander Pushkin), Op. 21, was commissioned and premiered by Indianapolis Symphony and Krzysztof Urbański in 2017. Lazić has performed his “Piano Concerto in Istrian Style”, Op. 18, many times since its premiere at the Aspen Music Festival in 2014. His arrangement of Brahms’ Violin Concerto as a piano concerto was premiered with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Robert Spano in 2009.

Recent releases include a cycle of Mozart Piano Concertos with Jan Willem de Vriend and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra for Challenge Records and a Gstaad Recital Live Recording for Onyx. His recording with Mozart´s chamber music, released by Onyx in 2020 was awarded the Opus Klassik 2021 in the category Chamber Music Recording. In autumn 2017 he performed on tour and recorded Beethoven’s own arrangement of his Violin Concerto as Piano Concerto in D major, Op. 61a, with Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and Gordan Nikolić. This CD was released in May 2018 by Onyx Classics. A recording of the Beethoven Triple Concerto was released for Sony Music in 2015. His live recording of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with London Philharmonic Orchestra and Kirill Petrenko received the German Echo Klassik Award 2009. Dejan Lazić has previously released many recordings with Channel Classics, including a critically acclaimed Liaisons series; the latest of which couples together C. P. E. Bach and Britten.

In the 2024/25 season he will release two new recordings: Mozart Piano Concertos Nos 20 & 12 (Jan Willem de Vriend/ Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra – Challenge Records) and Gstaad Recital Live Recording (Onyx). His recording with Mozart´s chamber music, released by Onyx in 2020 was awarded the Opus Klassik 2021 in the category Chamber Music Recording. Dejan Lazić has previously released many recordings with Channel Classics, including a critically acclaimed Liaisons series; the latest of which couples together C. P. E. Bach and Britten.

Dejan Lazić was born in Zagreb, Croatia, into a family of musicians. He grew up in Salzburg, where he studied at the Mozarteum (clarinet, piano and composition). The early encounter with Zoltán Kocsis and Imre Rohmann at the Bartók Festival in Hungary was decisive for his artistic career, as well as the significant influence from Peter Eötvös. Dejan Lazić lives in Amsterdam.

Information

The Europäische FilmPhilarmonie is a concert and production company for film music. It was founded in 2000 by Frank Strobel and Beate Warkentien and is based in Berlin. Under the artistic direction of Frank Strobel, the company continuously researches original film music and new scores as well as restored film prints. The aim of this work is to anchor and establish film concerts as an artform.

The core of the Europäische FilmPhilharmonie’s work is formed by film and film music concerts.

A film concert is a full-length live orchestral performance synchronised with the projection of a film. In addition to The Matrix and Metropolis, these include the popular Chaplin Classics (The Gold Rush, Modern Times, City Lights, The Circus), the German Classics (Der Rosenkavalier, Nosferatu – Eine Symphonie des Grauens, Die Nibelungen, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, etc.) and the Russian Classics (Battleship Potemkin, The New Babylon, The Last Days of St. Petersburg, Ivan the Terrible, Alexander Nevsky and others).

The film music concerts are purely symphonic concert performances with a wide variety of excerpts from film music, depending on the theme of the programme. In addition to the music, there is also a visual level with film clips and stills. Curated film music concert programmes include Master Directors and their Composers: Federico Fellini & Nino Rota, Cinematic Waterworks, The Cinema of Others, Chaplin in Concert – With a smile, Heroes and Villains, Early Sound Film Hits, From the Black Forest to Hollywood and many more.

Since its foundation, the Europäische FilmPhilharmonie has also specialised in the field of film music production. It organises and supervises the recording of music for film productions. Depending on the project, it provides the orchestra, choir, the conductor, the orchestra material, the recording venue, the recording equipment and the sound engineer. Recent film music productions include Das Wunder von Bern and Die Päpstin with music by Marcel Barsotti, Böseckendorf with music by Jörg Rausch, Empire of Silver with music by Cong Su, Han Li and Seikou Nagaoka and Buddenbrooks with music by Hans-Peter Ströer.

Eva Buchmann

The director and artistic leader of Punto Arte and the annual Punto Arte Festival, Eva Buchmann, creates opera productions that are developed in Tuscany and then travel across the globe. Her work is rooted in the thoughtful simplicity of traveling stages and the tradition of Commedia dell’arte.

With experience at major venues such as the Stanislavski Theatre in Moscow, Eva Buchmann has made it her mission to explore new performance spaces. Cleverly reduced to the essentials, she brings the magic of grand opera to opera houses, concert halls, factories, palaces, hotels, and warehouses with small-scale productions across the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the USA, and at festivals in Carmel, Malta, St. Moritz, Leipzig, and Amsterdam.

Recent productions include Haydn’s wanderlust-filled apothecary opera Lo speziale staged in a tiny Fiat Cinquecento that doubles as a self-contained set, as well as Ludmilla, an opera parody by Erich Ziegler composed in the Westerbork transit camp, Beethoven’s Fidelio, and Rossini’s La scala di seta.

Her upcoming performances will take her to the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival in 2026 with Lo speziale, to the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich with La scala di seta, and to the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra with Fidelio.

Her repertoire includes many operas from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as works by Verdi, Donizetti, Mascagni, Stravinsky, and Frid. Further productions include: Handel’s Alcina (Nikkikai Opera Tokyo, Japan), Handel’s Semele (Teatr Wielki Łódź, Poland), Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (Piccolo Festival d’Udine, Italy, and Rijeka National Theatre, Croatia), Der Schauspieldirektor/Mozart with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, The Snow Queen/Hefti and Der Schauspieldirektor/Mozart with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich.

Biography

Perceptive, inventive and involving, the productions of opera director Eva Buchmann are responsive to the scale and nature of their environment. Whether conceived for a specific opera house or concert hall, or for touring a diversity of venues, her stagings resonate with immediacy and authenticity.

Scrupulous in her interpretation of both the libretto and the score, Buchmann takes a thoughtful, fresh approach, whether dealing with mainstream repertoire, the revival of a rare work, or a world premiere. Her insights derive not only from her experience in music theatre around the world, but from her professional training as a cellist, psychologist and music therapist.

Two Punto Arte Festival productions that have toured extensively in Europe are Haydn’s Comedy Lo speziale, in which a Fiat 500 is used as part of the stage set and also for storing sets and props, and Erich Ziegler’s Ludmilla, a cabaret-inspired satire from 1944: rediscovered in 2016, it was created during the Jewish composer’s internment in the Westerbork transit camp in the Netherlands. In 2023, Lo speziale (already seen in such cities as Zurich with Tonhalle Orchester, Frankfurt with the Radio Symphony Orchestra (HR), Barcelona with Orchestra Simfònica de Barcelona i National de Catalunya and on tour with Kölner Kammerochester) visits Trondheim. Ludmilla, touring the Netherlands in 2023, will travel in March 2024 to the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas for its US premiere with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Eva Buchmann ’s collaborations around Europe with Jan Willem de Vriend include: Don Giovanni (Amsterdam, Basel, St. Moritz), the Singspiel partially attributed to Mozart Der Stein der Weisen (Łódź, Belgium and the Netherlands), Rossinis La Gazzetta (Basel, St. Moritz with the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra), Haydn Il mondo della luna (Łódź and Trondheim with Trondheim Symfonie Orkest & Opera), Händel’s Agrippina (on a tour starting from the Netherlands under the patronage of the Dutch government through the capitals of the European candidate countries Prague, Bratislava, Ljubljana, Budapest and Warsaw with the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam) and Orlando; Bibers Arminio, Salieris Prima la musica, Telemanns Pimpinone und Johann Sebastian Bachs Jagd- und Kaffee-Kantaten at the Leipziger Bachfest.

Her other baroque and classical opera productions include Händel’s Alcina at the Nikikai Opera in Tokyo (2018) and Semele at the Teatr Wielki in Łódź (2017), Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the Croatian National Theater Rijeka and in Italy (2018) as well as Così fan tutte for the Kraków Opera and the acting director for the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich.

She subsequently brought works by Verdi (La traviata), Rossini (La Cenerentola), Donizetti (Anna Bolena und Rita), Weber (Abu Hassan), Johann Strauss (Die Fledermaus), Mascagni (Cavalleria rusticana), Strawinsky (Mavra) und Géza Frid (Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank) to the stage. In 2018, on behalf of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, she staged the premiere of David Philip Hefti’s The Snow Queen, a musical story inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s work, for its 150th anniversary.

Her work also includes productions at Moscow’s Stanislavsky Theater and at festivals in Carmel (USA), Malta, St. Moritz, Udine and Amsterdam. Born and educated in Switzerland, Eva Buchmann now lives in Amsterdam. She is a guest lecturer in stage directing at the Łódź Academy of Music.
